Teaching AI to see waste at scale
Dominic manages the master dataset that underpins Greyparrot's waste recognition models. In 2025 alone, that dataset grew to 52 billion waste objects analysed and 477 billion datapoints gathered, drawn from over 200 Analyzer units across facilities worldwide.
From 17 material classes to 111 – and counting
When Dominic joined Greyparrot, the recognition model identified 17 types of material. He has led the taxonomy expansion that now covers 111 classes – from common plastics to packaging formats identified by brand and SKU – giving the industry a level of granularity that manual sampling cannot match.
His articles cover the technical foundations of waste intelligence – data annotation at scale, model accuracy, taxonomy development, and what it takes to turn billions of images into actionable recycling insights.
Dominic's background combines a BSc in Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University with hands-on industry experience as a Data Analyst at Veolia UK. He brings both technical rigour and a grounded understanding of what recycling operations actually need from their data.
